Berlin is a city with a small
immigrant population, a city with many political and religious scars,
a history of separatism and division. Tel Aviv is a city made up
of an immigrant population, the capital of a country in conflict,
whose existence is fundamentally linked to events which took place
in Berlin during the second world war. When we were invited to take
part in the Novalog exhibition in Tel Aviv, we felt we had to address
the political situation there in some small way, and focus on issues
of homeland and belonging. To do this, we took members of the international
community in Berlin, placed them in urban settings and asked them
questions about where their home is. Is home whene they come from,
or where they're at now? Is it a feeling or a set of values
they were born into, or which they developed themselves? We asked
why they came to Berlin, what their life histories are, and also
what they think about the situation in Israel.
The first installment of the exhibition, in Tel Aviv, comprised
an exposé of the heart-felt opinions of real Berlin individuals.
Their views and ideas are juxtaposed to create a representation
which is as complex as the situation itself. While in Tel Aviv,
we repeated the interview process, this time with Isrealis.
The second installation, presented in Berlin, combines these
two films: multi-monologues which address each other across a space filled
with a projected visualisation of the two cities Berlin and Tel Aviv. The
result is a piece about mobility, internationalism, immigration, definition
of home, exclusion and acceptance, the significance of family and territory,
and the desire to escape and to belong. | |
