Torre Monumental, Buenos Aires
As part of the Berlin Buenos Aires Art Exchange I was asked to illuminate the Monumental Tower for Long Night of the Museums.
The Monumental Tower, (originally named the English Tower) is a brick clock tower donated by the English to the city of Buenos Aires in 1916 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the May Revolution. Situated in a square in view of one of Buenos Aires many public parks, it occupies a threshold position in the city, close to the train station, and the docks, and a stone's throw away from both shanty towns and some of the city's most exclusive residences.
The Light Intervention is a form of grand scale temporary street art, visualizing the constantly changing dynamics passing through this crucial point in the city, representing the very contentious and political nature of this building's existence, using revolutionary graphics, the names of war dead, and playing with issues of scale, taking graffiti and architectural details from the tower itself and blowing them up to a height of 50 meters.
